What is site area charging?
Site area charging is the name we give to how we calculate surface water and highway drainage services for business customers. Please note that it does NOT affect how we calculate bills for household customers.
Previously, we calculated charges for surface water and highway drainage based upon the rateable value of the business property. However, we have now moved to a calculation method which is based upon the 'footprint' of the area that needs to be drained (which includes buildings, car parks and other non-permable areas that need to drain rainwater to our sewers). Our calculation does NOT include grassed or cultivated areas (as the rainwater will drain away naturally).
